Catherine McAuley Westmead was delighted to welcome Year 7 parents to the Year 7 Welcome Afternoon on Friday, 24th February
The Year 7 Welcome Afternoon held last Friday, 24th February was a wonderful event.
Attended by over 500 people, Year 7 students were very excited to show their parents around the school, take them into their Homeroom, show them their locker, the location of their classrooms and introduce some of their teachers, as well as many of their new friends.
Ms Refalo, School Principal, said that Year 7 students have settled into their school routines very well and have talked about how happy they are at school. Parents also have been full of praise for the staff and culture of the school.
Many Year 11 students supported the afternoon and the musical entertainment in Mercy Square added to the joyous atmosphere.

Senior Students Offer Tutoring To Younger Years
The Peer Tutoring Program is an initiative organised by the Student Leader of Learning to offer help and advice to younger students. Organised by Niamh M., Student Leader of Learning, the initiative aims to create an environment where the younger students feel supported and grow in confidence as they obtain help with areas of study they may be struggling with.

PROJECT COMPASSION ✝ Students in 8 Clare have been very busy over the past weeks making lanyards and keychains to sell at their Project Compassion stall today. The students sold $200 worth of items yesterday to the staff and today students had the opportunity to purchase. All money raised will go to Project Compassion.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 💜 Year 11 representatives attended the Parramatta City Council's International Women's Day event today. With the theme 'March Forward', the students listened to keynote speaker Carlene York, Retired Commissioner, NSW State Emergency Service, who is currently pursuing passions relating to emergency management and gender diversity. Carlene spoke on the rewarding experience of leading an organisation of people committed to keeping the community safe. With 40 years of experience within emergency services, possessing a unique variety of skills ranging from frontline policing, police prosecutor, senior leadership in strategy and leading police forensic services, Carlene’s speech was an inspiring one for the students to listen to. Following the presentations the Year 11 students had the opportunity to engage with both Carlene and the other panelists at morning tea.

PEER TUTORING PROGRAM 🖊 📑 The Peer Tutoring Program is an initiative organised by the Student Leader of Learning to offer help and advice to younger students. Running every Wednesday during lunch the younger students can come and get help from the seniors. “We want to form a connection between the different year groups so that younger students feel they can go to older students and ask questions,” says Niamh M., Student Leader of Learning. Yesterday was the first session for the year and had as its focus English. Next week the focus will be Mathematics and the week after that Science. The program will run throughout Term 1. It will continue throughout the year if the demand is high. “Years 7, 8 and 9 students can sign up to attend a session via Compass and then come down with any questions or anything they need help with,” Niamh says.

During Term 1 the school will be fundraising for Project Compassion and exploring the theme for this year, Unite Against Poverty. At today’s Ash Wednesday Liturgy the school community heard stories from around the world explaining the difference that our Lenten almsgiving makes. The House Patrons were presented with the Caritas Australia Project Compassion box for their House.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, a time of preparation for Easter. ✝ Today, during the Jubilee Year, as Pilgrims of Hope, the school community began our Lenten journey at our Ash Wednesday Liturgy. Assistant Principal Mr Hall and Leader of Liturgy, Elisha and Assistant Leader of Liturgy, Lara, brought the Ashes to our school from the Sacred Heart Parish Mass. During the liturgy the school community prayed together, listened to the Gospel and reflected upon what we can do to improve our lives and the lives of others especially as we Unite Against Poverty for Project Compassion. Our Year 12 Student Leaders distributed the Ashes to all who were present. The Ashes are a reminder that we are incomplete on our own. We need God and we need each other. On our Lenten journey, we set out with hope in our hearts. May that hope extend to the whole human family.

Last Thursday the School Captains and Year 12 Portfolio Leaders attended ‘Lifted Leaders 2025’, a conference organised by the Parramatta Catholic Diocese. The conference was held at West HQ, Rooty Hill and attended by student leaders from around the diocese, giving them the opportunity to collaborate and share experiences. Uplifting presentations were given by Bishop Vincent Long and other guest speakers. School Captain Kaitlin said, “the day presented a great opportunity for meeting new people and strengthening the faith of student leaders.”

CSDA PUBLIC SPEAKING 🗣🗣 Last Friday, Catherine McAuley hosted the first round of the Catholic Schools Debating Association Public Speaking competition. Our school hosted 11 different Catholic schools from around Sydney. Catherine McAuley had 12 students take part from Years 7 through to Year 12 with five students making it through to the Qualifying Final to be held this coming Friday at Our Lady of Mercy College. Well done to all students who took part and good luck to those competing again this Friday.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL 🏊 Congratulations to Coolock House who were the winners of the House Relay at the swimming carnival on Friday. It has been awhile since Coolock House have won this race.
