Year 8 English students enjoyed a live performance by Starrs Production of the short story 'Flowers for Algernon'

Last Thursday, 17th October Year 8 English students had the opportunity to watch a live performance of ‘Flowers For Algernon’, a science-fiction short story they have been studying.

Written by Daniel Keyes, the story centres on a developmentally disabled man named Charlie who is given the opportunity to undergo a surgical procedure to increase his mental intelligence. Year 8 student Heidi S. has written about her experience of watching this performance:

‘Flowers For Algernon’ was a really enjoyable play that kept me entertained and captivated for the whole hour. The actors' portrayal of the characters was very engaging. It taught me that intelligence is not the only thing that makes you a good person, it is how we interact and communicate with others that is what makes us who we are. It was interesting to see our current English unit of growth being explored through the main character's intellectual and emotional journey.

From his experiences I learnt that growth is not always linear or permanent, much like the ups and downs that everyone faces in life.

Thank you to Starrs Production who performed this play for the students.
