Congratulations to Alana S., Year 12, who graduated from her VET course, Certificate III in Human Services (Acute Care) on Thursday evening 19th September.
Alana was presented with her certificate at a ceremony organised by NSW Health Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District.
Alana is one of 69 students in four classes that graduated. Students were commended for completing a health related qualification involving 15 units and 80 hours of work placement alongside their HSC courses over the last two years. They were reminded of the importance of their roles as health care workers to nurture the mind, soul, heart and bodies of patients in their care. All students now have a qualification to work as health service assistants, either in a hospital or equivalent health service provider.
Applications for this course for next year are closed, however if you are in Year 10 in 2025 and would like to know more about the Certificate III in Human Services (either Acute Care or Allied Health), please talk to Ms Xuereb, Leader of Learning Pathways and Partnerships.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS ➡ Year 10 Visual Arts students of Ms Schmaltz were today helping each other as they participated in peer practical teaching. After conducting a gallery walk of each other’s work students were asked to make a note of whose works they particularly liked and which techniques they would like to learn for themselves. Those students who were chosen by their peers then spent time teaching their classmates how they did that technique or produced that piece of work. Students were able to watch, listen and then have a go at doing it for themselves.

CHAPTER CHATTER 📚 ‘Chapter Chatter’ is a new initiative, led by the Student Library Ambassadors, designed to promote both reading and the school library. It is a fortnightly gathering, every second Wednesday, which will look at a different theme each session. This may be a particular book or a particular genre. The first session was held yesterday and it looked at the very popular fiction book by Lynn Painter, ‘Better Than The Movies’. It was attended by a very enthusiastic group of Year 8 students who all expressed their love of both the book and the author. Students can look out for Chapter Chatter notices on Compass or see the signs in the school library. All students are welcome to attend.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS ➡ Year 10 History students had a unique opportunity last week as they listened to Mr and Mrs Cosgrove, representatives from the St Mary’s Vietnam Veterans Association, speak about Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Mr Cosgrove shared with students his experience of being a soldier and spoke about the experiences of soldiers and their families.

Year 8 Geography students visited Manly Dam Reservoir earlier this month for a Geography field trip. The students were able to conduct testing of the pH levels and turbidity of the water and participate in hand reel fishing and a bush walk.

The Year 8 Reflection Day was held on Tuesday 25th March, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord. The students were warmly welcomed to St Patrick’s Cathedral Parramatta by the staff and parishioners. The theme for this important community day was Young Mercy Women of Integrity.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS ➡ Year 9 students with Mr Geoghegan are looking at graphic design. The students need to design three graphic design materials and one laser cut design. The designs could be a poster, a photo album cover, a recipe, etc. Yesterday in class the students were sketching out their ideas and next week they will use Adobe Illustrator for the design.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS ➡️ Year 9 Textiles students with Ms Mani are designing cushion covers, with the design to be one inspired by a designer. Today in class the students were working on their portfolio or practising with fabric decoration. The cushion covers will be sewn using the sewing machines.

GRADE CHATS 🗣 An enjoyable morning today for the Years 7 and 8 students in Caritas, Clare and Coolock as they had a chance to come together for a combined grade chat. Organised by the Student Leaders of Hospitality, as part of the Harmony Day celebrations, Assistant Leader Georgia encouraged the students to take the opportunity to connect with each other. She invited Year 7 students to ask the Year 8 students any questions they may have about school. To start the chat the students were given conversation starter cards with some question ideas.
