Year 8 students attended Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral Parramatta as part of their Reflection Day.
The Year 8 Reflection Day was held on Tuesday 25th March, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord.
The students were warmly welcomed to St Patrick’s Cathedral Parramatta by the staff and parishioners. The theme for this important community day was Young Mercy Women of Integrity.
Year 8 explored this theme through various activities. The Dean and Administrator and Episcopal Vicar for Education, the Very Rev Robert Riedling, shared his insights about the Gospel reading of the Day (Luke 1:26-38). Fr Robert reminded the students that like Mary, we have received an invitation from God. We too, can be people of integrity and accept God’s invitation for us.
As we are in the Season of Lent, students spent time reflecting upon the Stations of the Cross. Year 8 joined with the parishioners for the 12:30 pm Mass which was celebrated by Rev Tom Green. In his homily, Fr Tom spoke of the significance of the historical setting of the First Reading, Isaiah 7:10-14, 8:10. Year 8 have been studying People of the Covenant in Religious Education classes and this Reading highlighted how God’s promises have been fulfilled through the Incarnation of Jesus.
Mrs Rehayem, Ms McGlone, Miss Reynolds, Mrs Malek, Mrs Flynn, Mr Bautista and Ms Banks were most happy to have accompanied Year 8 on this day and look forward to their continued partnership in learning more about our loving God.

Year 8 Geography students visited Manly Dam Reservoir earlier this month for a Geography field trip. The students were able to conduct testing of the pH levels and turbidity of the water and participate in hand reel fishing and a bush walk.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS ➡ Year 9 students with Mr Geoghegan are looking at graphic design. The students need to design three graphic design materials and one laser cut design. The designs could be a poster, a photo album cover, a recipe, etc. Yesterday in class the students were sketching out their ideas and next week they will use Adobe Illustrator for the design.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS ➡️ Year 9 Textiles students with Ms Mani are designing cushion covers, with the design to be one inspired by a designer. Today in class the students were working on their portfolio or practising with fabric decoration. The cushion covers will be sewn using the sewing machines.

GRADE CHATS 🗣 An enjoyable morning today for the Years 7 and 8 students in Caritas, Clare and Coolock as they had a chance to come together for a combined grade chat. Organised by the Student Leaders of Hospitality, as part of the Harmony Day celebrations, Assistant Leader Georgia encouraged the students to take the opportunity to connect with each other. She invited Year 7 students to ask the Year 8 students any questions they may have about school. To start the chat the students were given conversation starter cards with some question ideas.

MERCY 5 💧Today a number of Year 11 students, accompanied by Ms Reynolds, attended the Mercy 5 Senior Students Advocacy In Action Day. Held at OLMC Parramatta, students were taught about initiatives that have been implemented to provide communities in developing countries with clean water. 💦💦 The students were also asked to carry 9 litres of water to gain an understanding of the struggles people go through to have access to water daily. This was a real challenge!

LAW IN ACTION ⚖ Yesterday Mrs Nicolson and Ms Spelman took Year 12 Legal Studies students to visit the Downing Centre Local Court Complex and NSW Supreme Court. Students were able to see law in action and observed a variety of interesting cases that were a reflection of the content they have been learning so far in the Year 12 course. Students also had the opportunity to meet one to one with a Local Court Magistrate and a Supreme Court Judge. The students were able to put their knowledge to the test asking highly valuable questions about the criminal trial system as well as learn about the life and career pathway of a legal professional.

YEAR 12 HOSPITALITY ☕ Year 12 Hospitality students are gaining skills and knowledge in how to make an espresso coffee. This is part of their Hospitality Food and Beverage course. As part of our International Women’s Day celebrations the school has been collecting items for the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Parramatta Foodbank with a focus on female products. CROSS COUNTRY 🏃♀️ Well done to the students who took part in the school’s cross country event held last Wednesday, 19th March. This event is held to select the students who will represent the school at the PDSSSC (Parramatta Diocesan Secondary School Sports Council) Cross Country on 9th May. Ms Papazoglou, Sport Coordinator, said it was a successful event with 60 students competing. All students gave their best effort and the five fastest students from each age group will now be progressing to the PDSSSC carnival.
