Ms Indira Fernandes is retiring after teaching at the school for 50 years.
Ms Indira Fernandes, a Visual Arts teacher at the school who started in 1975, is retiring after 50 years.
“Ms Fernandes has shown an incredible commitment to the Catherine McAuley school community,” said School Principal Ms Mary Refalo. “Ms Fernandes has been on the staff for 50 years - an outstanding commitment to young women and to Catholic Mercy education.”
Former students and staff praised Ms Fernandes when the announcement was made on the school’s Alumni Facebook Page. They have shared many fond memories of her classes and thanked her for her years of service to the school.
“Ms Fernandes changed my life as a young creative artist,” wrote former student Louise Murer.
Ms Fernandes started teaching Visual Arts at the school in the 1970s
50 years is beyond an incredible achievement! What a blessing it was to be once under her wing and taught by her.
Former student Rachelle Mawbey wrote,
“You’ve been a legend at Catherine McAuley, and your creative energy has inspired so many of us! Time to trade in the paintbrush for some well-deserved relaxation—congrats on an amazing career!”
It is not just students who will miss Ms Fernandes, teachers and staff who have been fortunate to work with her will be sad to see her leave. Former teacher Schelli Ribs wrote on the Alumni Facebook page, “You are what teachers of the future need to model themselves upon! It was a pleasure working with you from 2010 to 2017! Enjoy a well deserved retirement!” and teacher Carolyn Anne wrote, “I am happy to have taught alongside you for 16 years.”
To celebrate Ms Fernandes and all that she has given the school there will be a special after school event on Friday, 8th November 2024 starting at 5pm. Mass will be held in the Mercy Chapel followed by supper in Mercy Square.

On Thursday last week Year 8 English students had the opportunity to watch a live performance of ‘Flowers For Algernon’, a science-fiction short story they have been studying. 💐 Written by Daniel Keyes, the story centres on a developmentally disabled man who is given the opportunity to undergo a surgical procedure to increase his mental intelligence. The students said they found the play very entertaining and it was interesting to see their English unit looking at growth being explored through the main character’s intellectual and emotional journey.

IT’S JERSEY THURSDAY 😃 Today is the first time the Year 11 students (who have now started Year 12 coursework) have been able to wear their Class of 2025 school jersey. The design was chosen by the students and can be worn on school grounds every Thursday. Spot Miss Radisavljevic in the photo who graduated from McAuley Class of 2018 and is now a PDHPE and Religious Education Teacher at the school.
