The High Achievers from the Class of 2024 returned to school on Wednesday, 19th February for a special assembly.
High achievers from the Class of 2024 returned to school on Wednesday, 19th February for the High Achievers' Assembly and the announcement of the 2024 Dux.
Each of the Year 12 2024 students who attended the assembly received an ATAR of 90 or above, placing them in the top 10% of the State, with the highest placed student ranked in the top 3%.
Lea Zeydan was announced as the Dux of 2024. Lea received an overall ATAR of 97.75 and gained a band 6 result in Biology, Economics, Physics, Mathematics and Studies of Religion. Mr Michael Hall, Assistant Principal, congratulated Lea on behalf of the Catherine McAuley community. “You certainly embody the Mercy value of excellence and are a remarkable role model for our community,” Mr Hall said. Lea has accepted an offer from the University of Sydney to study a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering and Bachelor of Commerce.

Ms Mary Refalo, School Principal, addressed those gathered in what she said was one of the school’s most favourite assemblies. “Today we recognise and acclaim all students who completed last year’s HSC, but in particular, we celebrate those who have achieved an ATAR of over 90 in their HSC.”
“To do well in your final year of school, your HSC year, is a great accomplishment, whether you are an ATAR or a non-ATAR student,” Ms Refalo said. “Doing well, striving for excellence, aiming for your personal best, is an important characteristic. It means that you are proud of your work and proud of yourself, and it shows integrity and courage. Additionally, striving for excellence, aiming for your personal best, is a demonstration of perseverance, focus and self-discipline. It reveals you as a person of strong character, as a woman who is determined to be the best she can be.”

68 students from the Class of 2024 were named on the merit list meaning that they achieved a band 6 result in at least one of their courses. A significant number of the year group, 95%, have been offered a place at university, TAFE or private college, and 54% of all exams undertaken were results in bands 5 and 6. “This demonstrates the breadth and commitment of these students,” said Mr Hall.
Congratulations to the entire Class of 2024. The Catherine McAuley Westmead community wishes you every success in the future.
