Three Year 10 students spent the day at Icon Metals last week as they explored careers in the construction industry

Three Year 10 students spent the day last Friday, 26th July exploring careers in the construction industry.

The students were accompanied by Ms Joanne Xuereb, Leader of Pathways and Partnerships, to the metal work and project management company Icon Metal in Silverwater.

Ms Xuereb said it was a very hands-on day where students had the opportunity to file keyrings made with their initials, cut pipes using the Brobo saw, shape the pipes into 90 degree angles and use a welding simulator.

The students also received a tour of the facility and learnt about the drafting and engineering side of major projects. One of these projects included recent work completed at the Sydney Opera House where Icon Metal was involved in reinforcing the structural steel of the main stage.

Sophia G., one of the Year 10 students who attended, said that the day was very informative.

This excursion helped us to understand different career options, by exploring specific jobs within the steel industry. This is important because we are still deciding our path for the future.
